Societe Generale launches financial literacy club for women in business


As part of its commitment as a signatory to the United Nations Women’s Empowerment Principles and its contribution to the UAE’s Year of Giving, Societe Generale Middle East held its first session of ‘The Circle’, a networking and financial literacy club for women.

The event, held on September 14 at the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, brought together members of the Dubai Business Women Council (DWBC) to explain the spectrum of options available to empower businesswomen in their financial decision-making – a crucial component for business success. Senior executives from Societe Generale shared their expertise on a broad range of topics, including ‘The State of Your Region’, ‘Islamic Finance: What is It and How Does It Work?’, ‘Demystifying Banking’, and ‘A Life Journey Through Wealth Management’.


“Empowerment through education and knowledge sharing is a key way to have a positive impact on society. As a bank, financial literacy is a natural endeavour through which we can support the community among which we live as well as the wider goals of the UAE leadership,” said Richad Soundardjee, Chief Executive Officer, Societe Generale Middle East. “We are very proud to partner with the Dubai Women Business Council and launch ‘The Circle’ for its members. The success of the inaugural session we had today is testament to the immense appetite for financial education and information, and we look forward to rolling out this initiative further in the coming months.”

The UAE is making great efforts to promote women’s empowerment, and aims to rank in the top 25 countries in the world for gender equality by 2021. The country established a Gender Balance Council in 2015 to implement initiatives that reduce the gender gap and promote gender parity. Of the country’s 30 cabinet ministers, 8 are women.

A 2015 survey by Standard & Poor’s showed that women are more financially literate than men in the UAE, as opposed to virtually every other country in the world where men are either equal to or more financially literate than women.
